As summer draws to a close, it’s easy to get caught up in preparing for another school year. As we frantically pull together new supplies, go shopping for new clothes, and make sure all of the school documents are ready, it’s easy to forget about our four legged family members.

This transition can cause increased stress and fear for our furry friends. The freedom and extra attention that comes from the family being home during the summer abruptly ends and suddenly schedules change. They are left alone for many hours at a time and don’t understand why. This could cause changes in mood or behavior.

FOR THESE REASONS, IT IS IMPORTANT TO THINK ABOUT HOW YOU CAN PREPARE THEM FOR BACK TO SCHOOL AS WELL:

• Pets need structure and routine in order to minimize stress. Keeping your pet’s feedings  and activity time to about the same time each day may decrease negative behaviors.
• Leave a blanket or t-shirt with your scent on it in your pet’s bed.
• Interactive toys: these are great tools to prevent boredom and destructive behavior. One great option are puzzle based toys that require the pet to manipulate it to receive a food reward.
• Balance boredom with vigorous activity: when the family gets home, be sure to spend some quality time with your pet. Go for a long walk, play fetch in the yard or even have your cat chase a toy on a string. 
• Consider  doggie day care: this is a great way to get social dogs to burn energy and have a good time with other social dogs.
